Hi folks.
I’m beginning to prep my preaching calendar for 2010-2011 and I’d like some help (particularly from people connected to the Central Baptist community).
We’ve got a good nine weeks between Epiphany Sunday (January 2) and the first Sunday of Lent (March 9). So I thought it might be interesting to see what questions folks might have that they feel would make good sermons. It would certainly be something interesting.
Here’s some rules.
- Be specific in the question – vague questions might not take a lot of brain power to come up with but they also don’t forward our conversation.
- Be charitable – if you come up with a question that [insert name] needs to hear don’t ask it. Instead, go stand in front of a mirror and ask the Holy Spirit to come up with a question that YOU need to hear.
- Be prepared to hear points of view that you don’t agree with. I’m won’t be preaching these sermons to finish arguments, but rather to highlight how faithful Christians are wrestling with the call of discipleship in this world. This means that I may even highlight points of view that I don’t agree with if it’s pertinent to the discussion.
- Please, don’t go fishing. If you want to know what I believe about something just ask me. I think just about everyone still at Central has figured that out – I’m just reiterating it.
- Don’t limit questions to, “What does this verse mean” (though those are certainly fine). Feel free to ask how the Scripture leads us to interact with this world in which we live.
- Don’t ask the first question that comes to mind – spend a few weeks pondering. Who knows what the Spirit might come up with.
I’m looking forward to what you folks are going to come up with!
Also, is there a particular book of the Bible you’d feel particularly interested in spending time with during the season of Easter? We’re going to do a series on Revelation in the Fall, but another New Testament book would be nice!
