Prayers of the People for a time of violence and despair

Lord, in a time of division, we come to you in prayer.

For those who have sunk so deep into despair they believe violence is the only way to bring about change. Jesus, give them hope that they might see a better way.

Lord, in your Mercy.
Hear our Prayer.

For those who are so overwhelmed by change, they embrace rage in order to feel strong. Jesus, send your spirit to grant them peace in their weakness.

Lord, in your Mercy.
Hear our Prayer.

For those who would use the levers of power to impose their vision of your Kingdom upon others without care for conscience, liberty, or the well-being of others. Lead them to repentance.

Lord, in your Mercy.
Hear our Prayer.

For those who hold office. In this time of turmoil remind them that service to others, rather than the stoking of ego or the accumulation of privilege, is their calling.

Lord, in your Mercy.
Hear our Prayer.

For those who are afraid for the future. In the present give them the courage to love their neighbors.

Lord, in your Mercy.
Hear our Prayer.

For those who claim to follow you. May your words, โ€œblessed are the peacemakers,โ€ lead us to spaces where we may encourage the sort of justice which leads to peace.

Lord, in your Mercy.
Hear our Prayer.

For the despondent and lost. May your people, guided by your Spirit of love, grant to them a sense of inclusion which leads them to love both God and neighbor.

Lord, in your Mercy.
Hear our Prayer.

We pray these things, Lord Jesus, in your name and in hope that you might turn us aside from the path of violence and toward the path of life and hope. Amen.
