Behind the Pain

Since I began posting the “Painfully Hopeful” strip with regularly I’ve had a lot of folks ask, “How do you do that cartoon thing?” I’ve mentioned that I do it all on my iPhone, but let me take the time to show you the process…

First, I take a picture with my iPhone camera. I've used my iSight camera as well, but the low resolution images don't convert as well.

Next, I bring it into Toon Paint - using the sliders to get my look right

I end up with a sketch that looks like this..
Color Chooser for Toon Paint
Toon Paint lets you choose colors from the image, which is very handy!
Paint Brush
Then you color! Toon Paint lets you adjust the size of the brush and allows for pinch-zooming on the image

You end up with something like this!

Today, I learned another trick that I can do in the GIMP or Photoshop.  If I save the sketch and set it up as a layer above the original with the sketch set to “multiply” it creates a pretty amazing effect.  Look for me to use this a bit in the future…

The multiply layer style really makes for a cool effect!

To make my images a comic strip, I use an app called “Strip Designer.”  This let’s me put the text bubbles and captions on.  Perhaps I’ll show that another time!
