Pastoral Prayer

And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.
Philippians 1:9–11 NRSV

I translated these verses for my sermon this week and all I could think was what a wonderful prayer this is. It really should express the deepest desire of every pastor’s heart. I mean, why wouldn’t we want folks to overflow with the love of Christ, both for each other as well as for the world-at-large?

My greatest joy as a pastor is when someone has an insight or idea for how we can live out Christ’s love which would have not ever occurred to me. To me, that gives a great deal of glory to God.

After all, when it seems like (out)rage is the only emotion the world understands at present, we could really use an over abundance of sacrificial love.
