Our culture tends to think of prophets as “fortune-tellers.” Biblically speaking, this incorrect. In the Bible a prophet typically functions as a “covenant prosecutor,” calling the people back to the LORD’s commands – reminding them of the call to treat people justly, particularly “widows and orphans” 1. The image above testifies to this ongoing work of calling people back to the covenant and treating people with equity. It hangs in New Brunswick Theological Seminary and is worth seeing in person.
