Pastoring, in my mind, is a mysterious vocation. We stand between the light of comfort and the darkness of sorrow. We shepherd people out of this world, and into new life. We proclaim a message of great power, which can only be expressed in this world through weakness. When we at our best as leaders, we’re actually running to keep up with the flock.
Pastoring is a calling to lead people into the mystery of the “already, but not yet,” and it’s not for the faint of heart. How has a socially awkward introvert lasted so long in one place? 1 The grace of God.
- If I’ve counted correctly, I think I’m the fourth-longest tenured pastor in Central’s history. This boggles my mind. ↩
