Nerding, historically

Today my wife volunteered to help host the open house at the Indian King Tavern. It’s an important site for New Jersey history in Haddonfield. When the Patriot legislature fled Northern Jersey for the South, it met in it’s long room. In that space it adopted the seal for the newly organized state and formally adopted that the word “colony” would no longer apply to New Jersey. It was, in their minds, a “free and independent state.”

Today’s open house was accompanied by reenactors demonstrating a 18th Century skirmish. For all my history trips, this was actually the first battle reenactment I’ve even been too. It was quite interesting!

In the image below, the Patriot troops level their muskets with the command “make ready!” Soon they will unleash their weapons with the command “fire!”
