First Game

Thursday night the NFL season opened. As the Philadelphia Eagles are the defending Super Bowl Champions 1 the league was in Philly for a kickoff party. That evening it dawned on me that this was the first regular season football game of Bump’s life and our team was playing in the game. He’s never lived in a world where the Eagles weren’t winners of the Lombardi Trophy.

That evening I got Bump ready for bed, and dressed him in his Eagles onesie for the game. We then sat on the couch and had a short conversation which went something like this.

“OK Bump, this is your team. This is who we root for, because that’s the right thing to do. You stick with your home city 2. And this year we’re the defending Super Bowl champions, and that’s pretty cool because we’ve never been that before. So when they play this is what we do, we get some friends together and we watch the game. In the grand scheme of life this doesn’t matter, there are more important things we should be concerned with, but what we’re doing is part of being from here. OK? This is your team.”

Bump agreed 3.

And to mark the special occasion I took Bump’s picture. He’s a cutie.

  1. I still have shake my head in disbelief when I type or say that phrase.
  2. Note: It is also acceptable to stick with your parent’s home city teams.
  3. That is, he grinned, said “Ayaaaawaaanaa,” and drooled on me. I’m taking that as a, “Yes, daddy.”
